Ira Glass is America’s best storyteller. Over two million people listen to his show This American Life every week. But this weekend even more people listened as Ira issued a dramatic retraction of the most listened to podcast in the history TAL (849K downloads) that featured Mike Daisy who as it turns out lied about important details in his dramatic report about the manufacturing process of Apple products in China.

That retraction was featured in most major newspapers this week because of how quickly Glass moved to protect his name and his brand. I was impressed with Ira’s leadership and the humility he displayed in his rapid response to this attack on his integrity and the character of his show.

A few years ago I had the privilege of being interviewed by Ira on This American Life. After that conversation he agreed to appear on my show – Jim Henderson Presents.

This video app is the first of a series of in- depth interviews I’ll be doing with other thought, cultural and spiritual influencers.

In this interview you’ll discover fascinating details about Ira such as…Where did America’s favorite storyteller get his start? Who shaped his values and informed his journalistic sensibilities? Where does his insatiable curiosity come from? How does his sense of fairness influence his show’s production values? Who edits Ira?

Watch this delightful interview with Ira Glass. At times sober, then hysterical, this compelling 54-minute interview is conveniently formatted into thirteen different mini conversations covering a range of issues such as why he’s kind to those he disagrees with, how he became an Atheist, who the people are that changed his life, why he’s so intrigued with Christians and his suggestion that I start my own reality show. Watch a sample

Women are clearly the most discriminated group of people in history. If you remove race, money and religion but add gender you will see what I mean.

Women and girls have been discriminated against for millennia by men – in recent history it’s been mostly white men. Jesus isn’t happy with this set up which is why (unlike men) he never met a woman he didn’t like and he played favorites with women.

It was his example that prompted me to expose the misuse and abuse of power by people who call themselves followers of Jesus ad why I chose to tell the stories of 15 women who call themselves (or called themselves) Christians. It’s to provide reasonable people with a rationale to change their thinking and to introduce people to each other in the hopes that they might like someone they expected to well… hate.

If you are interested in being part of this conversation join Barna Group President David Kinnaman and me next Monday night for The Cloud a 60- minute talk show on your cell phone (not a lecture centric conference call).

Next to playing in band what I absolutely love to do most is interview people. I love being nosy about peoples personal, professional and most of all religious/spiritual lives. I love asking questions other interviewers skip – like the ones about God or faith or why people believe what they say they believe (or don’t) and what they’re doing about it. I love giving people permission to tell me what they actually believe rather than what they think they’re supposed to say. I love gaining people’s trust and becoming their friend. I love giving them a different way to think about Jesus and I love doing it without having to trick or game them.

I don’t usually feel “proud” of work that I create. I’m normally critiquing it while jn the act of presenting it. I never rest. But recently I’ve produced what I hope will be the first of many interviews under the auspices of my new company Jim Henderson Presents and I am very proud of this work. It took many people and much much longer than expected but thanks to a partnership with Owen Kindig and Ztorytellers I’m happy to announce the release of my inaugural interview with Ira Glass. Ira is veritable rock star with the NPR crowd. He has over 2 million listeners to his weekly show This American Life.

A while back he agreed to sit down with me and talk about anything and everything. Some of the questions are standard such as how did he get his start in radio and how did This American Life come into existence. But some will surprise you such as how he became an Atheist and his affection for Christians. Ira is transparent, inspirational, educational, vulnerable and funny. He and I became friends as a result of these conversations. He even answers my emails now (at least once every 6 months

Download the app/interview and get to know Ira in a whole new light. After you watch it please go to the itunes store and rate it. That one act will do more to ensure that more and more people will be able to discover this interview. We have other similar interviews in the pipeline so stay tuned to Jim Henderson Presents.

I just finished producing and hosting our first version of You Lost Me Live with David Kinnaman in Washington DC.

YLML helps young people and those who lead them see the incredible number of opportunities that are sitting right in front of them to take the ways of Jesus public.

My team and I design live events that engage the audience by asking them to help shape the content. Short presentations ignite public conversations. Spontaneous interviews take place with expert practitioners who are “discovered’ right in the event. All wrapped up in live music.

We see this kind of design as the future of live events- public conversations that leave people feeling more like they were at a concert than a conference. An experience that engages and exhilirates rather than exhausts people.

In a recent study people were asked to identify the biggest mistakes teleseminar presenters make
(this applies to live presenters as well)

1.Lecturing too much. When teleseminar leaders lecture too much,
it’s like the adults in Charlie Brown, after a while it all sounds like blah, blah, blah.
Lecturing is dead. People can check out without even leaving the room. Smartphone?

2.Too much content - yes, teleseminar (and live) leaders can actually can give too much info! Audiences are not as stupid as they used to be (Google). Now they can watch(Youtube)and read (Wikipedia) about you on the way to the event making you less important as a celebrity but more necessary as a guide (due to info overload)

3. Too much focus on themselves and not enough focus on the attendee – Too many teleseminar leaders want to talk all about themselves and what they know. Remember, the teleseminar attendee is thinking, “WIIFM – What’s In It For Me” Live interaction lets the presenter know directly what the audience is wondering about. Instead of them doing Q&A with you, you do Q&A with them. When you are answering a question they want answered they will truly listen.

4.Not engaging the audience - This is all too common. By not engaging the participant, they cannot retain nor apply what they have learned, making the teleseminar (and the leader) forgettable. At JHP we like to say “people remember what they say not what you say” Get them talking to each other about your ideas and you engage them. It’s like people who cant stop talking about the band they just heard or movie they just saw.

Since then in just 36 days (including a Christmas break) 78 people have given $7,225.00. That means people have given an average of $92.68 each.

We only have $775.00 to go to get the complete $2,000 match a generous donor has made – which will get us to the $10K goal.

If we keep up at the same pace we only need 8.3 people to give $92.68 each and we’re there.

(Imagine if 14.7 people gave)

We only have 4 days left

Keep Gabe connected to Ken and Kelly Bean – donate right now
